Canoeing
An experience for those who like a challenge.
Canoe through the ruggedly picturesque Thaya Valley and experience first-hand the beautiful countryside of this region.

When the water level fulfils the criteria laid down to protect nature and the environment, it is possible to canoe on the River Thaya. Challenging rapids and weirs will make the trip an unforgettable experience.

You can choose between the following routes:

Raabs - Kollmitz - Eibenstein (approx. 13 km)
This beautiful stretch of the River Thaya provides an unforgettable view of the ruined Kollmitz Castle. Please use the marked portage paths.
Canoeing is best when the water level is between 120 cm and 180 cm as measured in Raabs.

The “Haidlmühle” and “Kollmitzgraben” portage paths must be used at all times of the year. As soon as the water level in Raabs falls below 125 cm, the “Seebsbachmündung” portage path must also be used.

Pay attention to red-green water gauge.
Weikertschlag - Raabs (approx. 10 km)
This stretch, the most beautiful of the Moravian Thaya, can only be canoed by experienced canoeists when the water level is high. We would, however, ask you to note that canoeing is prohibited on this stretch during the breeding season and before the young birds have left the nest (1 March to 31 May).

Pay attention to red-green water gauge; canoeing is only permitted when gauge shows green.
Karlstein - Raabs (approx. 10 km)
Beautiful stretch with a few narrows. The “Schrattental” is a paradise for nature-lovers.

Minimum water level 151 cm in Raabs and 34 cm in Schwarzenau during the spawning season (1 March to 30 June).
Outwith the spawning season: minimum water level 150 cm in Raabs and 30 cm in Schwarzenau. Pay attention to red-green water gauge; canoeing is only permitted when gauge shows green.
Valid for all stretches:
Canoeing is permitted between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (6 p.m. during the summer) and when required water level has been reached.

When the water level in Raabs exceeds 85 cm - warning! Canoeing in open Canadian canoes is too dangerous!

When the water level in Raabs is between 185 cm and 250 cm - warning! Canoeing still possible with sport kajaks or outsides but with professional equipment.

Canoeing prohibited when water level exceeds 250 cm.
