The amethyst is a mystical gemstone with a distinctive colour and a reputation shrouded in mystery. A world of adventure for the whole family has been created around this worldwide rarity, the vein amethyst in Maissau. There are only about twenty regions in the world where such amethysts can be found. The unrivalled purple hue of the Maissau amethyst is also very rare.

The Amethyst World Maissau is located directly on the boundary between the Waldviertel and the Weinviertel regions of Lower Austria and throughout the year offers a wide variety of attractions for the whole family: the largest open-cast amethyst vein can be marvelled at in the gallery, and the exhibition “Kaiser, König, Edelstein” (Emperor, king, precious stone) provides a wealth of information on the history and importance of precious stones.

One of the highlights is to dig for your personal amethyst in the old quarry and polish it before taking it home with you. Rubber boots and tools can be borrowed on site. Anyone who does not find an amethyst is guaranteed one from the treasure chest.

The site of the Amethyst World has special powers that can be experienced under the guidance of experts using divining rods and pendulums. A “Garden of Strength” has been laid out in the grounds. In addition to the “amethyst pond” with its flowers and sweet-smelling herbs, there is also a “Chakra trail”, the first of its kind in the world. When you walk along this trail, the body's own centres of energy are activated giving you a feeling of well-being.

There is a well-stocked shop and a cafeteria in the information centre. The Amethyst World and garden are wheelchair accessible; entrance to the Amethyst Park only is free of charge.

Open all year round: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; May to September 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guided tours: the Amethyst World can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours every hour on the hour, or by request. Groups (minimum 20 persons). Special guided tours and presentations can be arranged for groups (minimum 8 persons) by prior arrangement.
