Hiking in the southern Waldviertel is particularly attractive. Its southern flair originates in its proximity to the Danube. In order to reach proper summits it is often necessary to conquer small and not-so-small differences in altitude. In many places the Ysper/Weitental can be compared to an oversized panorama terrace with a view stretching into the surrounding countryside and as far as the Alps.

Proper mountains, thousands of metres high. Mighty granite rocks. Small villages. Wide valleys and narrow gorges. The Ysper gorge is one of the best known natural landmarks of the Waldviertel. This cultural voyage of discovery starts at Leiben Castle, continues through the curious but unique “Tal der Sonnenuhren” (valley of the sun-dials) and ends at Pöggstall Castle. Small museums and exhibitions lovingly created with an eye for detail, small well-tended monuments and ruins hidden away in the woods complete the picture. Within the shortest space of time you can leave behind you the hustle and bustle of every-day life to breathe in the invigorating air, step out and order your thoughts.

The journey is its own reward - the ancient pilgrimage trails take you to Maria Taferl, the famous pilgrimage basilica that thrones over the Danube Valley. Hiking in the southern Waldviertel sharpens the mind and stimulates the imagination!
