Description

At the foot of the town of Weitra - in the so-called Ledertal - you will find the Bürgerspital with its hospital church. The Lainsitz ripples peacefully past what is said to be the oldest stone house in Weitra.

The Bürgerspital was built in 1340/41 by the Weitra town judge Chunrat Marchart and served as a place of care for old, sick and impoverished citizens. The adjoining church is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. This is indicated by a painting in the doorway: It depicts the Holy Spirit as a dove landing. A particular highlight of the church is the early Gothic choir. The church is still used today for concerts and theater performances - the acoustics are excellent.

Worth seeing in the Bürgerspital and the hospital church:

  • Gothic wall paintings, some of which date back to the time of construction
  • Early Gothic choir inside the church
