Description
Even though it has now merged with the houses and courtyards of the town, Horn's town wall is almost completely preserved and invites you to take a walk with a lot of history. A mighty defense tower still guards it today.
The walled town of Horn is situated on a fertile plain. The valuable soil and favorable climate have ensured that the area has been settled since the Neolithic Age. Walls steeped in history surround the town. In Robert-Hamerling-Straße, there are well-preserved rectangular battlements that are an impressive reminder of times gone by. The defense tower near the former Bürgerspital with its impressive "helmet" and beautiful keyhole embrasures has been converted into a documentary cinema where you can watch a documentary about the robber chief Johann Georg Grasel. A portal leads to the wall's battlements.
Home of the shooting clubs
After the fortifications were abandoned, moats were filled in and outworks were removed. Numerous green spaces were created as a result, and the filled-in moats were converted into shooting ranges for shooting clubs - they have a more than 400-year tradition in the city. At first, the citizens were trained in the use of weapons here. Later, when this was no longer necessary, they shot at richly decorated targets. This is how the "tournament of the bourgeoisie" came into being. The shooting club at the Horner Stadtpark existed until 1977.
