St. Oswald in the southern Waldviertel is known for the beautiful view of the Alps: dominated from the north by the Burgsteinberg (1013 m), St. Oswald offers a magnificent view of the Alps to the south. Interesting are the mystical places, such as the Herzstein, Totenkopfstein, Steinerne Kornmandel, etc.
The strange rock formations of the Ysper valley have always fascinated people, as numerous legends and myths prove. Their secrets have not yet been revealed. The 5 m high Herzstein – after which two circular hiking routes are named – reminds some of the human organ, while others – inclined towards geomancy and esotericism – recognize female shapes and life symbols here, considering the granite block a double cult stone. In any case, it is a highly interesting stop on a route that also leads to other peculiar rock figures, such as the "Totenkopf" – which can be climbed on a stairway – or the "Steinerne Kornmandel". A route to fondly remember.
Beautiful hike through forests and meadows with a magnificent view of the Alps at the water reservoir.
Starting point of the tourSt. Oswald - Church Square
Destination point of the tourSt. Oswald - Church Square
You go from the church square past the leisure facility to the sports field. Here you turn right onto a beautiful forest path with rock groups. In front of the Plesberg house (beautiful old farmhouse) you come across a wooden cross (beautiful view over the village and Losenegg, remains of a typical Waldviertel meadow with rock groups). You continue through Plesberg and Gunnert. Before the intersection with the state road, you turn right onto the forest path. At the reservoir, after the forest path, a forest trail leads to the summit of the Stockberg, where there is a “blood basin.” According to old tradition, death sentences were carried out here about 1000 years ago at a court site. On the way back, you go down to the water reservoir (with a magnificent view) down to the state road to St. Oswald. Or at the end of the forest path, turn left towards the sports field following path No. 18 back to St. Oswald.
Access from the Westautobahn A1 via Ybbs on the Danube either via B 36 through Yspertal to St. Oswald or via Ybbs along the Danube west of Ysperdorf, direction Yspertal via Fell to St. Oswald.
