Großdietmanns
Description
The market town of Großdietmanns is located in the north-western part of the Waldviertel in the district of Gmünd. Geographically, parts of the municipality lie in the Gmünd basin and partly in a hilly forest landscape. The municipality lies between 490 - 610 m above sea level and has an area of 39.92 km². At the end of 2023, the municipality had around 2,180 main residents.
The market town is home to a number of small and medium-sized enterprises, with agriculture and forestry dominating the municipal area. Due to its proximity to the district capital of Gmünd, Großdietmanns offers good connections to the public infrastructure as well as plenty of nature and open space. The Lainsitz flows through the municipal area and forms the Lainsitzniederung nature reserve. The Lainsitzniederung is a feeding and breeding ground for birds in particular, as well as a popular resting and gathering place for migratory birds, including numerous endangered species.

The market town has a Lower Austrian state kindergarten, a day care center and an elementary school. There is also a doctor whose surgery is located in the doctor's house in Dietmanns.
Sights - Tourism
Dietmanns parish church
The late Gothic, essentially Romanesque church dates back to the second half of the 15th century, while the Baroque tower was built in the 17th century. It is dedicated to St. Fourteen Holy Helpers and belongs to the deanery of Gmünd. It stands at the beginning of the village of Dietmanns.
Höhenberg parish church
The parish church of St. James the Elder belongs to the Gmünd deanery and is one of the oldest churches. The essentially Romanesque church with a west tower and a Gothic choir dates back to the 13th century. The church and the former cemetery are listed buildings.
Höhenberg Observatory of the Waldviertel Astronomical Society
The observatory of the Waldviertel Astronomical Society is housed in a six-metre-high brick tower between Höhenberg and Reinpolz. A small planetary hiking trail also leads to the observatory. Around the observatory there are approx. 6,000 m² of land available for parking and outdoor equipment.

Ehrendorf Castle
Ehrendorf Castle looks back on almost 600 years of history. It was built by the Arndorffer family and was first mentioned in a document in 1427. In 1619, Ehrendorf Castle was destroyed by the imperial mercenary troops. The current building and shape date back to around 1619.
Visits are only possible from the outside!
Chapels and religious monuments
The market town of Großdietmanns is rich in religious monuments (see the municipal homepage or materl.at) and there is a chapel worth seeing in each of the eight cadastral communities.
Waldviertel Railway
Dietmanns is located on the narrow-gauge railroad that runs from Gmünd to Groß Gerungs. The over 120-year-old railroad line offers numerous attractions for young and old alike, and riding on a steam locomotive is a special experience. For more information, visit www.waldviertelbahn.at.
