Description

Langau is located in the northeast of the Waldviertel directly on the border with the Czech Republic and was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century. In 1712, Emperor Charles VI. passed through the town on his coronation journey to Prague. At the beginning of the 20th century, the branch railway line Retz – Langau – Drosendorf was built. Since its closure in 2001, the "Reblaus Express", a "nostalgia railway", runs on this route during the warm season.
In 1910, brown coal was discovered between Langau and Schaffa (Šafov). Large-scale mining began after World War II and was carried out as an open-cast mine. After cessation, the Langau leisure center was created here – leisure lake with sunbathing lawn, children's swimming area, outdoor showers, playground and lake buffet, beach volleyball court, water skiing, and youth summer camp at the leisure lake in Langau.

Angler's paradise Hessendorf: 3 ponds, own railway station in summer (Reblaus Express), snack bar, playground, fishing equipment rental, info at www.anglerparadieshessendorf.at.

Route description Leisure trail

The path begins at the Leisure Museum Langau on Sommerzeile. After a short way through the Oberort, it turns right into the so-called "Stalleker Field", which got its name from the Czech neighboring village Stalky. At the widely visible radio mast, you turn right, and immediately afterwards right again. Soon you reach the road to Šafov. Now you walk along Schaffingerstraße, past a business premises, then turn right towards the campsite. After the campsite, you walk towards the large mining lake, where brown coal was mined in an open-cast mine in the last century. Then you cross the stream at the bridge and walk to the right along the lake. Now you turn right towards Bienenlandl. Shortly after, you come to the show bee house and the Ambrosius shrine. Then you come to a meadow with a view of the large mining lake and a resting place. Further along the lake shore, the path leads you first past the boathouse to a parking lot, then left to SOLA (summer camp) Langau and then to the leisure center with a spacious sunbathing lawn, a lake buffet, a water ski school, a beach volleyball court, and a leisure climbing garden. Here you can test your motor skills and fitness on a 60 m long course.

Nearby is also a shooting range, which is open on Sunday mornings from spring to autumn.

You are welcome to return to the Leisure Museum. The path starts at the Leisure Center, back to the boathouse and along the mining lake. Then turn left over a small bridge and cross the Langau stream where, after a short time, you go right up to the spoil heap. At the top, all paths lead down, whether you go left, right, or straight ahead. Then you arrive at a crossroads where you meet hiking trail 630/E8, turn right towards Riegersburger Straße. Cross this and follow the signage of hiking trail 630/E8.
