Weitra

Description

Experience Weitra and be enchanted by its charming atmosphere.

On May 26, 1321, King Frederick the Fair granted the townspeople of the time a privilege that prohibited beer brewing within a one-mile radius of the town. This made the town the "oldest brewing town in Austria". The town experienced a heyday of brewing culture in the following centuries. In its heyday around 1645, there were 33 bourgeois breweries as well as a municipal and a manorial Hofbräuhaus. If you are careful when walking through the old town, you will find plaques at the former breweries reminding you which houses once had the so-called brewing rights.

The old town of Weitra is almost completely surrounded by an impressive town wall dating back to 1292. During the day, picturesque hiking trails around Weitra invite you to take relaxing walks. Coming from all directions, the magnificent Renaissance castle of Weitra rises above the historic town and inspires visitors during tours and events.
