Bernhard Oase
Description
On the occasion of the 775th anniversary of the founding of Walterschlag in 2009, the villagers commemorate the origins of the village. The area of the municipality of Schweiggers lies in the so-called "northern forest", the "silva nortica", and was colonized in the 12th century. The clearing lords were the Kuenringers, who systematically colonized the area with the help of the Cistercian Order. The village of Walterschlag appears as early as 1234 as the property of Zwettl Abbey. For this reason, a "Bernhard Oasis" was built, dedicated to the most important saint of the Cistercians, namely St. Bernhard of Clairvaux († August 20, 1153).
The official opening of the Bernhard Oasis took place in August 2009 as part of a large celebration. The marterl was blessed by Diocesan Bishop DDr. Klaus Küng.
