Bierwerkstatt Weitra

Description

In 1645, there were 33 bourgeois breweries in Weitra, as well as the municipal brewery and the manorial brewery.

In 1912, the Herrschaftliches Hofbräuhaus came into the possession of the Pöpperl family. The new owner, Gustav Pöpperl the Elder, came from Bohemia. The profession of brewer had a long tradition in his family. Among other things, his father was the leaseholder of the Bergreichenstein brewery in the Bohemian Forest at the time.

Gustav Pöpperl took over the management of the brewery in 1942. At this time, the brewery's storage cellars are located in today's Sparkasseplatz 160 building in front of the town gate, while the other parts of the production facility are in the Rathausplatz 6 building!

Hermann Pöpperl takes over his parents' business in 1972, builds a new bottling plant and puts a modern bottling line into operation.

40 years later, at the beginning of 2003, Hermann Pöpperl hands over responsibility for the Weitra brewery to his friends, the Zwettler brewing family Karl Schwarz.

With the largest investment in the brewery's history, all the facilities were brought up to the latest standards in 2020 and the capacity of the beer workshop was doubled.
