Biri-Bründl Nonnersdorf
Ponds, lakes and springs
Description
The church stands quietly on a slope between Walkenstein and Sallapulka in the Waldviertel, surrounded by fields, meadows and forests. Maria im Gebirge, one of the oldest pilgrimage churches in Austria, was once just as famous as Mariazell, Altötting and St. Wolfgang. The people of Mariazell called their statue of grace a sister of the miraculous image of Sallapulka.
Through a conversation, the author (dowser and commuter) heard of a fountain where the faithful used to wet their eyes in the past. Below the church, at the edge of the forest, there is a small forgotten chapel. It is not shown on any of today's detailed maps. An inspection revealed a water vein. It rises under the high altar of the church as a blind spring (water rises and flows underground), comes out of the church on the southern side next to the tower, and goes in an arc under the parking lot into the forest inside the road into the small Bründl chapel.
