Bruneiteich bei Altmanns

Outdoor adventure

Description

The Bruneiteich pond near Altmanns close to Heidenreichstein is one of the largest fish ponds in the Waldviertel and has been a nature reserve since 1979. The pond, which covers around 38 hectares, is not only an important habitat for rare water birds such as snipe, redshank and common tern, but also a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. Surrounded by moors, reed beds and granite rocks, the Bruneiteich offers an impressive backdrop for walks and bird watching.

A special highlight is the annual fishing festival at the end of October. Traditionally, the water in the pond is drained to harvest carp, vendace and zander. Visitors can look over the fishermen's shoulders, enjoy regional specialties and learn more about pond farming in the Waldviertel - a real experience for young and old.

Nearby are the mysterious Geyersteine, moss-covered granite formations named after the composer Franz Geyer. They are just a few minutes' walk from the pond and are a popular destination for hikers.

If you want to experience the tranquillity and originality of the Waldviertel, you should explore the Bruneiteichweg, a walk full of nature, history and regional charm. Important: Please do not enter the moor and reed zones in order to protect the sensitive wildlife.
