Historischer Eiskeller

New worlds to experience

Description

Built in 1801, the building is located in a wooded area above Brunn am Wald Castle.

After renovation in 2005, the ice cellar of Brunn am Wald Castle, which was in operation until the Second World War, is now accessible again.

The special feature: The inside of the cellar is just as intact as it was a good 60 years ago. There is no visible patina.

Purpose of the ice cellar:

In the past, the corridors were mainly used to store meat and game. The ice was cut at the castle pond in winter and tamped down in the ice pit in the middle of the cellar. The ice lasted the whole summer. Overflow openings allowed the cold air to enter the corridors where the food was stored.

The ice cellar can be described as the "forerunner of a refrigerator", but with natural energy.
