Hoheneicher Teiche

Outdoor adventure

Description

Between Hoheneich and Pürbach in the Waldviertel, there is a unique ensemble of ponds that delight visitors with their tranquil nature and varied landscape. Anyone hiking from Schrems will find ideal paths along the sometimes larger, sometimes smaller bodies of water such as Ullrichsteich, Althöllteich, Spielbergerteich, Otterteich or Frauenteich.

The Hoheneich ponds were created by human intervention as early as the 13th century and today provide valuable habitats for rare plants and animals. Birdwatchers in particular get their money's worth: the ponds are among Austria's "Important Bird Areas". Dragonfly fans will also discover numerous species here, seven of which are particularly common in the region.

One highlight is the Mitterteich: nestled among reeds and moorland, the bathing pond with its shady birch and poplar trees invites you to enjoy a relaxing summer's day. A small snack station provides refreshments and parking spaces make it easy to set off on long walks.

Culturally interesting: in 2011, the Pürbach pond landscape was used for the film "The Chinese", which earned the place the nickname "Swedish village of the Waldviertel".

The Hoheneich ponds are one of around 1,400 ponds in the Waldviertel that characterize the landscape of northern Austria. A visit is worthwhile at any time of year - from snow-covered winter magic to the golden atmosphere of autumn.
