Description

The Krahuletz Museum in Eggenburg offers visitors an insight into geological, palaeontological and archaeological objects relating to the natural and cultural history of north-western Lower Austria. Most of the exhibits are finds made by the Eggenburg researcher Johann Krahuletz. However, the museum not only shows history, but also writes history itself: the museum building was built over 113 years ago! Opened in 1902, the museum was built by the town of Eggenburg for the collections of the explorer Johann Krahuletz. Today, it not only displays his collections, but also presents a variety of special exhibitions.

In the basement, visitors can learn all about the formation and development of the region's landscape. One floor up is the large folklore collection and the exhibition "Clocks from three centuries". The second floor is dedicated to the theme of "Archaeology". Here, visitors can find out about 30,000 years of settlement and cultural history in north-western Lower Austria. The special exhibition is located on the third floor. The current theme is "Eggenburg town history".

Mineral show depot of the Krahuletz Museum

In the former furniture factory (Depot 2 of the Krahuletz Museum), just a few minutes' walk from the museum, the mineral show depot opens every first Saturday of the month from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors can take a guided tour of the depot and learn more about the glittering treasures of the Waldviertel. Over 7,700 mineral species and 1,500 rock samples from the Waldviertel, the Dunkelsteiner Wald- and Mühlviertel as well as from the overlying Molasse zone have been collected for the collection by volunteers.
