Pfarrkirche Kühnring

Church

Description

The essentially Romanesque castle chapel of the former Kuenringer castle, consecrated to St. James and St. Philip, was rededicated as a parish church and significantly rebuilt in the early Baroque period. It is said to have been built by Azzo von Kuenring as early as 1083.
Kühnring Castle was probably built between 1120 and 1140. Around 1460, the castle was destroyed by an act of the sovereign, as former mercenaries had entrenched themselves in it and plundered the surrounding area. Today, only a few large sections of wall, the church and part of the moat bear witness to the former castle complex.
