Pfarrkirche St. Stephan

Church

Description

The parish church of St. Stephen towers majestically over the townscape. It has been Eggenburg's landmark since the beginning and is the second largest parish church north of the Danube.

With its two Romanesque east towers (12th century), the early Gothic choir (14th century) and the late Gothic nave (1491-1515), this building is a monument to local stonemasonry. Some special features: late Gothic light house, church father pulpit, high altar 1885, side altar: Gothic altar of St. Elisabeth (1521). Next to the church, a 13th century charnel reminds us of the transience of human life.
