Rathaus Weitra
Description
The town hall, which was designed by architect Josef Utz from Krems in 1892/1893, forms the center of the town hall square.
The master builder was lgnaz Knapp from Weitra. The town hall was built in the Ringstrasse style and is primarily based on the forms of the Italian late Renaissance. On the second floor of the central wing is the beautiful banqueting hall, whose ceiling is decorated with a baroque fresco by Wolfram Köberl (1955).
It depicts the legend of Veit Ursini von Rosenberg, who gives each of his sons the towns he founded, namely the Czech towns of Gratzen, Wittingau, Neuhaus and Krumau as well as Weitra, by presenting them with a rose.
The large triangular square sloping towards the north and west was reduced in size in the Middle Ages by the addition of the middle row, today the northern front of the town hall square. The square was subdivided by the construction of the new town hall (1892/93).
The town houses on the Rathausplatz form a harmonious, evolved historical ensemble.
