Schauenstein Castle ruins

One of the most beautiful ruins in the central Kamp Valley ("Kamptal") is the Schauenstein ruin in the cadastral municipality of Krug.The Schauenstein ruins are located on the "Schauensteinweg" circular hiking trail, which starts in Altpölla and leads via Wegscheid am Kamp to the ruins and via Krug back to Altpölla (12 km). However, the easiest way to reach the Schauenstein ruins is from the parking lot in the village of Krug. Here, a romantic hiking trail (1 km) leads directly to the Schauenstein ruins. The ruins are freely accessible, but you need a key to enter the keep, which has been converted into a lookout point.You can get the key from the Hainzl family in Krug 29 (right next to the parking lot to the ruins), at Gasthof Speneder in Altpölla on 02988/6280, at Gasthaus Kainrath in Altpölla on 0664/41 19 674 and at Hotel Wegscheidhof in Wegscheid am Kamp on 02731/237.The village of Krug is located on the Böhmerwaldstraße between Horn and Zwettl, approx. 12 km from Horn.
