Description

In the Schrems High Moor Nature Park, visitors can experience the fascinating world of moors in the heart of the Waldviertel. The Nordic-style Schrems high moor is reminiscent of the landscapes of Scandinavia with its bog pines, moss cushions and swamp pore. Located between Langschwarza, Gebharts and Schrems, the area covers around 300 hectares - 119 of which are protected as a nature park and are part of the Ramsar site "Waldviertel Ponds, Moors and Rivers". After decades of peat extraction, the sensitive ecosystem has been allowed to regenerate since 2000. Today, a new wilderness is emerging here, providing a habitat for rare plants and animals: Yellow pond lilies, moor frogs, dragonflies and the carnivorous plants sundew and water hose make the high moor hiking trail a special nature experience.

The moor stores large amounts of carbon and thus makes a valuable contribution to climate protection. The starting point for explorations is the UnterWasserReich nature park center, a Ramsar information center with an exhibition, water garden and a popular otter enclosure. From here, the barrier-free footbridge leads directly into the moor, where visitors can experience the beauty of this unique habitat up close. Those who want to enjoy the landscape from a bird's eye view can climb the 20-metre-high sky ladder - after 108 steps, an impressive view opens up over the high moor and the densely wooded surrounding area.

A visit to the Schrems High Moor Nature Park combines nature experience, biodiversity and climate protection, a place in the heart of the Waldviertel that shows how worthy of protection and alive moors are.
