Stadtpfarrkirche zum Hl. Peter und Paul
Church
Description
If you come to Weitra from the north-west, the castle and the parish church form a unique ensemble. Dedicated to St. Peter and Paul, the church invites you to admire its wonderful paintings and statues inside.
The parish of Weitra was founded by the Kuenringers before 1182 and originally had its seat in today's Alt-Weitra. However, the parish rights were soon transferred from the church in Alt-Weitra to the town church in the north of the town, which also served as a fortified church at the time.
The Romanesque church originally consisted of a rectangular hall and the east tower. It was not until the 15th century that Gothic extensions and alterations were made. The Magdalen Chapel (today's St. Barbara's Chapel) was added, as well as two side aisles. Around 1505, the tower was also raised by one storey and provided with large windows.
Inside, the church is decorated with mostly baroque paintings and statues. The high altar is the work of Johann Walser from 1749, while the altarpiece on one of the side altars was painted by Martin Johann Schmidt.
The church can be visited as part of a guided tour of Weitra. Church services are also held on Saturdays and Sundays.
