Wallfahrtskirche Hoheneich
Church
Description
The baroque church is a jewel among Austria's churches. The magnificent high altar with its almost 600-year-old statue of Mary with the Child, the breathtaking ceiling painting and the many paintings, statues and ornaments bring a little piece of the splendor of our Lord to this world. Hoheneich's parish church is not just a place to marvel at, however; it is also an excellent place for prayer and devotion.
The magnificent landscape of the Waldviertel forms the backdrop for our Marian pilgrimage site. The parish covers the area of the market town of Hoheneich - the villages of Hoheneich and Nondorf - as well as Neuniederschrems.
Hoheneich is still one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Austria. On some days, especially on the big pilgrimage day in September, numerous pilgrims come from near and far to find protection, comfort and joy with the Virgin Mary. Hundreds of pilgrims are welcomed to Hoheneich every year. The beginnings of the parish date back to 1240. Hoheneich appears as a separate parish in the 14th century (1390). At that time, it belonged to the Zwettl deanery and was under the jurisdiction of the Vienna officialate of the Passau diocese. The patron saint of the church was the lord of Kirchberg Castle. Pilgrimage groups can register at any time for masses and devotions and also for a guided tour of the church!
