Sgraffitohaus

Description

The depictions focus on scenes from the legendary early Roman history according to Titus Livius.

The pictures are based on illustrations by the draughtsman Johann Bocksberger. The original was a copperplate engraving and dates from after 1573.
In the bottom line you can see the decades of the man's life. Each phase is assigned to an animal.

At the age of 10 it is the billy goat, at 20 the calf and at 30 the man grows into an ox. At 40, the artist compares the man to a lion, at 50 to a fox and then to a wolf. At 70, a man becomes a dog, then a cat, at 90 a man becomes a donkey and at 100 even a goose.

The sgraffito houses in Weitra are of historical substance. In addition to the magnificent sgraffito house (no. 4), there is also sgraffiti on houses no. 9, 13 (sgraffito depictions of St. George and Virtue) and on house no. 48.
