Description

Granite towers and clear river banks, forests, meadows and fields, medieval castles and palaces, ponds, lakes and streams – a different view awaits around every bend with highlights that are waiting to be discovered. In the Waldviertel, you can experience freedom on two wheels and discover the region at your own pace, whether on a road bike or mountain bike. A varied experience is guaranteed.

The three main cycle routes, the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle route, the Iron Curtain Trail and the Thayarunde, create an Eldorado for cyclists.

Kamp-Thaya-March cycle route

Cycle along the most beautiful rivers and diverse stretches of countryside in the Waldviertel. The tour starts in Krems and goes along the rivers Kamp and Thaya all the way to Retz.In total, you will cover over 250 kilometres in six days on the route, surrounded by diverse scenery. Wild nature, quiet villages, medieval castles and picturesque vineyards: The combination of nature, culture and culinary delights make the Kamp-Thaya-March cycle route an unforgettable sporting experience.

Iron Curtain Trail

“Experience” the history of the Iron Curtain along the approximately 200 kilometre long historic route through the Waldviertel. In total, the Iron Curtain Trail – the number one Euro Velo 13 cycle route – runs from the Barents Sea on the Norwegian-Russian border to the Black Sea. The route from the north to the south of Europe covers the entire former border. The Iron Curtain that once separated is now regarded as a significant symbol of shared experiences in a reunited Europe. In some places, the traces of the fortifications of that time are still visible today. Discover historic places, impressive relics and natural gems.

Thayarunde

Whether you are a family with children, a cycling enthusiast or a group of friends: Everyone can enjoy pedalling along the Thayrunde cycle path, which runs along former railway lines! The Thayarunde route is about 111 kilometres long in total, with about 50 kilometres on newly asphalted former railway tracks. Thanks to the levelling of the landscape in the past for the steam locomotives of the time, we can now enjoy a wonderfully flat,cross-border circular cycle route. It leads through the scenic stretches between Waidhofen an der Thaya and Slavonice in the Czech Republic. As well as between Göpfritz an der Wild and Raabs an der Thaya. Due to the numerous historic Waldviertel natural and cultural gems along the route, you could say that a cycling experience in a class of its own awaits.

Round off your stay

In addition, for all cycling enthusiasts out there, there are some excursion cycle routes, that you can customise to suit your stay. For experienced cyclists, these can usually be completed in one day. Make your cycling experience something truly unique.
You can enjoy relaxed nights in inns and hotels along the three cycle routes. A particularly practical and included service is the transportation of your luggage from one accommodation to the next. Optimal for picking up where you left off the next day without any stress!

Look forward to your very own “Waldviertel cycling experience”.
