Groß-Siegharts, a typical small town of Lower Austria, is located at an altitude of 534 m. Nestled in the gently rolling landscape of the Waldviertel, the town has its own special history. The place was first mentioned in documents around 1150. A market since 1727, Groß-Siegharts has had city rights since 1928 and has nearly 3,000 inhabitants.

Description

Route description Starting from the village center in Fistritz (Gasthaus Peschel), the hike leads past the new settlement located at the village end, away from the state road, along a now ascending path heading east. Along the way, you pass the Silberteich (silver pond) and then the "Fistritzer Kreuz" (Fistritz cross). After some time, you reach the "Bandlkramerrundwanderweg" (circular hiking trail no. 37), where you then continue this path to the right heading south. After a while, you arrive at the "Sulzteich" (salt pond) located in the forest area, named after the former "Sulzmühle" (salt mill) nearby. You keep right again and then arrive at the "Dicke Marter". Whether the "Dicke Marter", located at the crossroads of the forest path Groß-Siegharts-Ludweis-Fistritz-Seebs and well known locally by this name, was erected in 1868 by Franz Dimmel out of piety or for a particular reason, can no longer be verified. Franz Dimmel, a miller by profession, was married to the daughter of the owner of the Sulzmühle. In the roof gable of the very large wayside shrine, a young man is said to have hidden for a long time during World War II out of fear of persecution. The hike continues on the right path of the "Dicke Marter", where later at the next fork you keep left. You then reach the starting point again at the Sulzlüsskreuz in Fistritz.
