Hiking tour Starting from Nebelstein - Nebelstein Hut
Long-distance hiking pleasure "From Nebelstein to Retz". About 180 varied kilometers to be explored. The cultural landscape is also fascinating: numerous castles, abbeys, and palaces of the Waldviertel can be discovered here.
This special long-distance trail is varied and appealing for sporty people who want to explore the diversity of the Waldviertel landscape. In northern Lower Austria, the plateaus of the Waldviertel meet the lowlands of the Weinviertel. The Nebelstein on the foothills of the Bohemian Forest greets Retz in the Weinviertel. The raised bogs accompany you to Schrems and Heidenreichstein, the Dobersberg-Thayatal Nature Park and the Thayatal National Park invite you to explore: thousands of plants and animals have found their home here. And around the wine town of Retz, it is the vineyards and cellar streets that make hiking a pleasure.
The routes are not too strenuous; the natural landscape compensates for the required stamina. The motto is: The journey is the goal. In the Thayatal, the river has created its own little world. Impressive rock gorges alternate with gentle, densely wooded slopes; wild riverbanks demonstrate the power of water. If you are very lucky and quiet on your feet, you might discover one of the wildcats that have found a home again in the untouched forests. (In the national park house, there is an enclosure where you can safely see the wildcats.) Eventually, you will arrive at the legendary Umlaufberg, which is almost entirely surrounded by the Thaya. How much is visible from the top: if it were not for a narrow rock band at the narrow point of this loop, the Thaya would flow smoothly in a circle!
