Felsengarten bei Lembach
Outdoor adventure
Description
A special natural experience awaits visitors between Hausbach and Lembach in the Waldviertel: the rock garden near Lembach. In the middle of a sparse coniferous forest, reminiscent of the forests of Scandinavia, there are impressive granite formations created by the weathering of wool sacks. The most beautiful rocks can be discovered in around 1.5 hours on a five-kilometre circular trail, a sidestep of the Bärentrail near Rappottenstein.
One highlight is the Stone Archway, a natural granite arch that rises between two mighty boulders. You can climb through and even over it. Nearby is the Mushroom Stone, which grows out of the forest floor like an oversized hat. Further north is the imposing glacier mill, around twelve meters high. Its depressions were not formed by glaciers, but by water, frost and the effects of acids over millions of years.
The Steinerne Stube, a small rock room with so-called "sacrificial bowls", is somewhat hidden. These depressions are natural shapes formed by weathering and freezing water. Finally, it is worth climbing up to the ruins on the Burgleiten, a mysterious rock castle from the 12th century with a beautiful view of the hilly landscape of the Waldviertel. If you want to discover even more, the Höllgraben in Litschau or the Scorpion's Place near Kautzen are further fascinating natural destinations.
