Kremstal Canyon
Outdoor adventure
Description
The Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) Canyon in the Waldviertel is a spectacular natural experience full of dramatic granite gorges, ancient forests and mysterious caves. Above the confluence of the Great and Little Krems, also known as the "Zwickl", the deepest canyon in the Waldviertel unfolds with impressive rock formations and near-natural hillside forests of lime, oak and beech trees. These forests are ecologically valuable and provide a unique habitat for bats, woodpeckers, owls and rare beetles. Hartenstein Castle towers high above the Große Krems, half ruin, half intact, and lends the landscape a slightly spooky atmosphere.
The Kremstalweg trail no. 625 leads 93 kilometers through the valley and the canyon and combines with the Ysper-Weitental circular hiking trail no. 22 to create an impressive hiking experience through the Waldviertel. Those who climb the Teufelsrast are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German). The striking rocky roof protrudes far into the landscape and offers both hikers and climbers a wide range of possibilities.
The caves of the Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) Canyon are fascinating testimonies to the history of nature and mankind. In the Eichmayer Cave, researchers have discovered the remains of 27 mammal and eight bird species, while the Schusterlucke, accessible via the Vettersteig, tells stories from the time of the Thirty Years' War. The Stone Hall impresses with a 30-metre-wide rock roof and countless granite stone almonds. Hiking, climbing and experiencing history - in the Krems Valley ("Kremstal" in German) Canyon, nature and adventure merge into an unforgettable experience.
