Straßertal
Outdoor adventure
Description
Countless oak trees line the path to the Falkenberg ruins in the Straßertal valley. In summer, their green crowns provide shade, in autumn the forests glow in golden colors. The view from the ruins over the picturesque Straßertal valley, the rolling hills of the Waldviertel and the wine landscape is breathtaking. Where peace and nature reign today, once stood the castle of the Falkenberg family, built in the 12th century. Only the mighty keep and a few archways are reminders of the time when Rapoto von Falkenberg watched over the valley here. After a siege in 1300, the castle fell and is now a silent witness to past power and living history.
Old oaks and sparse mixed deciduous forests grow on the southern slope of the ruins, perfectly adapted to the dry, rocky soil. They are more resistant than many coniferous forests in the region and show how powerful and healing nature can be. Those who hike here will feel the alternation of history and landscape, silence and vastness.
A special tip for nature lovers: the "Ruinen-Wanderweg" trail leads from the church in Straß im Straßertal over the hills up to the Falkenberg ruins. In golden autumn, when the vines and forests glow in warm tones, the tour becomes an unforgettable experience - especially in combination with the culinary treasures and wines from the Straßertal and nearby Kamp Valley ("Kamptal" in German).
